Originally from Southern California, Julie Barwick now lives and works in San Francisco as a pianist, composer, and teacher. She began studying piano at the age of 7 and in high school was accepted to the Coronado School of the Arts, where she specialized in piano performance. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music with highest honors from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2005 and has studied piano with Irina Fisher, Michael Seth Orland, Deno Gianopoulos, and Robert Schwartz. She has also studied with composers Dan Becker, David Garner, Belinda Reynolds, Cindy Cox, and Henry Threadgill. Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, she moved to Paris to study piano with Adam Wibrowski at the Conservatoire Hector Berlioz in Paris. In 2015, Julie received her Master of Music in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
As a teacher, she has been a very active member of the MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) where she has also served on the board of directors and has been the Certificate of Merit Branch Chair for San Francisco. In addition to teaching, she works as an accompanist for instrumentalists and vocalists.
Drawing inspiration from her classical and jazz background, she not only enjoys writing for traditional chamber music ensembles, but also non-traditional ensembles as well as experimental jazz groups. She has written for ensembles with such diversity as Sqwonk, Ignition Duo, Cecilia String Quartet, CityWinds, Siroko Duo, Andronica Trio, The Holly Martins, and Bleeding Vector. Julie will be Elevate Ensemble’s 2017-18 Composer-in-Residence, and will be writing two new pieces for Elevate this season. As a winner of the 2016 Areon International Composition Competition, she was commissioned to write a piece for Areon Flutes, a premier flute performance and teaching ensemble. Her music has been performed throughout the US, and was featured on the Verdant Vibes Benefit Concert in Rhode Island earlier this year. Other recent projects were commissions from Hot Air Music Festival, Siroko Duo, Jill Morgan Brenner, Andronica Trio, and Ignition Duo through the Guerrilla Composers Guild.
As a co-founder of Helia Music Collective along with composer Emma Logan, she believes strongly in supporting the creative endeavors of women in music throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Helia Music Collective recently held their first concert of all living women composers featuring the flute ensemble, Siroko Duo. They are currently planning their next concert and collaboration for fall 2018.
